Overview:

Derived categories of coherent sheaves on algebraic varieties were introduced by Grothendieck and Verdier in the 1960s in order to formulate a relative version of Serre duality for sheaf cohomology. In the 1990s, the seminal work of Bondal and Orlov showed that derived categories are far more than abstract technical tools: they encode deep geometric information about algebraic varieties, especially their birational geometry. In the course of this development, many fundamental notions—such as exceptional collections, mutations, semiorthogonal decompositions, and Serre functors—were introduced and have since become central in the field.

Since then, derived categories have become a major theme in modern algebraic geometry. They have also revealed remarkable connections with other areas, including symplectic geometry, representation theory, and mathematical physics. The subject continues to develop rapidly and has had a profound influence on a wide range of mathematical disciplines.

This conference brings together experts in derived categories, algebraic geometry, representation theory, and related subjects to discuss recent developments in the field, on the occasion of Professor Alexey Bondal’s 65th birthday.
