Overview:
One of the most critical issues in modern astronomy and astrophysics is understanding when and how supermassive black holes (SMBHs) formed and evolved throughout cosmic history. The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) has been highly productive in this field, yielding a wide variety of scientific results, from studies of host galaxies in the local Universe to discoveries of the most distant quasars. In addition, with the advent of wide-area imaging and spectroscopic surveys from Euclid, Rubin/LSST, and Roman, AGN science is expected to advance significantly, particularly through statistical studies and searches for rare populations.
This conference aims to share recent insights into the growth history of SMBHs derived from HSC data, including both SSP and open-use observations, and to discuss strategies for extending this legacy into the future. In particular, science operations of the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) and the PFS-SSP began in March 2025, and PFS is expected to provide millions of galaxy and AGN spectra in the coming years. This conference will therefore provide an excellent opportunity to share scientific results based on initial PFS data, including open-use and SSP observations, and to discuss the spectroscopic properties of AGN.
We invite all researchers who lead or are interested in AGN studies based on wide-field survey data to participate in this conference. Presentations on any AGN science or observing proposals using these facilities are welcome.
The key topics to be covered in the conference include, but are not limited to:
- AGN results from HSC-SSP data
- Observing status and initial science results from PFS-AGN, including open-use, SSP, and community/observatory filler programs
- Overview, progress updates, and value-added catalog on PFS-SSP GE/CO AGN science
- Overview and progress updates on broader science cases in PFS-GE and PFS-CO, including synergies with AGN studies
- Current status of software and hardware, and identification of challenges for AGN science
