Scientific Rationale:

Acceleration of charged particles out of their thermal distribution is one of the fundamental features that plasmas in the universe ubiquitously exhibit, but its mechanism is still poorly understood. Meanwhile, there have been accumulating pieces of evidence, or indications, in space, solar, and even astrophysical plasmas that magnetic reconnection plays a key role in converting magnetic energy into bulk energization of plasma particles including their non-thermal acceleration.

With emphasis on particle acceleration in solar flares, the workshop aims to  tackle the still-unknown connection between particle acceleration and magnetic reconnection in the plasma universe with the following approach:

(1) Put together recent observational and theoretical/simulation studies of particle acceleration in solar flares and the plasma universe under the context of magnetic reconnection. Clarify our current understanding and share it among participants.

(2) Survey near-future plans of observations as well as directions of theoretical/simulation studies which help understand the relationship between particle acceleration and magnetic reconnection. The PhoENiX mission concept for studying particle acceleration in solar flares is one of such plans from observational perspective. Discuss potential synergy among the current/near-future activities and devise possible approaches for collaboration among different disciplines.
