Science theme: probing the physics of cosmic baryons with background light

Backlights and probes:

  • CMB: kSZ, tSZ, and patchy screening
  • FRBs: dispersion measures

  • Quasars and galaxies: Lyα forest and absorption lines (including X-ray absorption)

  • Astrophysical systems: the halo–gas–galaxy connection in clusters, groups, galaxies, and the cosmic web

Simulations & methods:

  • Hydrodynamical simulations (CAMELS, TNG/TNG-Cluster, FLAMINGO, CROCODILE, COLIBRE, etc.)

  • Fast methods (Baryon pasting: Backlight, Gion, Mucho-Uchuu, AbacusSummit, AGORA, PINOCCHIO, etc)

  • New methods (AI/MI, SBI, etc)

Synergies and joint inference:

  • combining backlights (e.g., kSZ x FRBs) and stacking on spectroscopic galaxy samples

The workshop follows the galaxy cluster conference at Tohoku University (May 10–14, 2027), so interested participants can attend both in a single trip to Japan. Those staying in Sendai over the weekend can also enjoy the Sendai Aoba Festival (May 15–16) and travel to Nagoya on Monday, May 17.
